Ballard's Product Engineering Department has an opening for an Applications Engineer to join the Systems Engineering Platform team supporting the fuel cell balance of plant systems being developed and operating in the field. The successful candidate will work within a structured environment to apply their strong technical skills to the successful installation and integration of stacks and systems resulting in reliable, long-term service operation.





Responsibilities:




  • Interact with customers to understand requirements and explain specifications to reach an acceptable design that satisfies the customer.

  • Perform the key role of technical liaison with major customers in the field of material handling, bus motive power, and telecom backup power systems.

  • Analyze field data, understand how Ballard's system and stack designs contribute to measured responses, explain to internal and external stakeholders how the Ballard units are operating in the field.

  • Generate engineering documentation for mechanical systems and components, including: integration manuals; component design requirements and specifications; design review and release materials; detailed test plans and conformity assessments.

  • Participate in customer in-situ commissioning and trouble-shooting. Lead the process as the Ballard window-person to assure customer value.

  • Interface with equipment suppliers, fabricators, and internal supply chain to integrate and install mechanical components.

  • Lead failure analysis investigations on failed mechanical systems and components.

  • Conduct trade-off studies and systems analysis for overall optimization of mechanical systems.

  • Support commissioning both on site and in the field.





Requirements:




  • Degree in mechanical engineering, electro-mechanical engineering, engineering physics, or a related field and 3-5 years of directly related experience.

  • Experience in both an industrial and product development setting.

  • Good knowledge of structural design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow design and selection of mechanical components.

  • Demonstrated ability to make early-stage products operate in the field by proven and/or creative methods.

  • Proven ability to work to time schedule and commitments for deliverables; determine scope of work and plan effectively to meet those commitments.

  • Be available to travel 20% to 40% of your time 3 weeks per quarter

  • Experience with standard engineering practices such as DFMEA, Product Certification, Codes and Standards, and Safety & Reliability Analysis.

  • Strong attention to detail with excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience working with your hands.

  • Practical experience with mechanical and electrical systems is highly preferable.

  • Previous background with fuel cells and/or fuel cell systems is highly preferable.
