Job Description
Hastings Racecourse is currently seeking qualified individuals for the position of Starter to join our Racing department. This is a non-union management position.
Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of Racing Secretary this position is responsible for overseeing Assistant Starter, Groundsman and schooling horses and ensuring a fair and safe start for all races. Ensures adherence to the Company's policies and procedures, motivates, and leads by example and supports Great Canadian's learning environment while establishing a safe and welcoming work environment for all team members throughout the Racing season.
Key Accountabilities:
- Overseeing the Assistant Starter, Groundsman, provide training and information, assign employees to horses, provide special instructions and order to load horses
- Prepare weekly staffing scheduling, payroll timesheets, recruitment
- Loading, dispatching horses, ensure gate is in good mechanical/electrical condition, gate properly located for every race
- Keep records and observing of behaviour history of every horse racing at Hastings
- Maintain radio contact with the stewards, provide in writing load order and handler for every horse, place unruly horse on the gate list
- Responsible for Schooling horses at the gate: horses learn to break from the gate, observe and provide information on individual horses as to procedure and handling, maintain record of horses
- Liaise with trainers - provide progress information on individual horses
- Make decisions: horse is approved for the gate, provide racing office the names of approved horses, notify Clockers of horses working at gate, notify Stewards when a horse or rider need to be observed leaving the gate
- Responsible for Starting races with the safety of people and horses in mind
- Liaise with GPEB and horsemen
- Assure a safe, fair, and efficient workplace environment for all employees
- Manages other initiatives as required & assigned
Education and Qualification Requirements:
- Minimum Grade 12 education
- Minimum 10 years' experience horse racing knowledge, minimum 5 years' experience in Gate work
- Previous Supervisory experience
- Excellent organizational abilities/attention to detail/accuracy/multitasking/work well under pressure
- Strong communication and inter-personal skills, including discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work effectively without direct supervision
- Very high regards for Health & Safety protocols, compliance, safety protocols and various regulations.
- Knowledge of operation and regulations pertaining to the thoroughbred horse racing
- Good interpersonal and organizational skills
- Must successfully pass a criminal and credit record check by the Gaming and Policy Enforcement Branch (GPEB) - Racing
Work Environment Considerations: Regular track environment, variable and flexible shifts throughout the racing season, non-traditional work hours.
